LOCATION

The State of California is located in the western Pacific region of the United States and comprises a total area of 158,706 sq mi (411,048 sq km), of which land takes up 156,299 sq mi (404,814 sq km) and inland water 2,407 sq mi (6,234 sq km).

It is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, and Arizona to the southeast in the United States, as well as Baja California in Mexico to the south.

California's capital city is Sacramento, with the four largest cities being Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco.

California is made up of 58 counties and is known for its diverse climate and geography, as well as ethnically diverse population.

Southern California

Southern California (often abbreviated as So Cal) is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Its population is centered on the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, and Riverside. It can also include Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, and Orange County. Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, behind only the Northeast Corridor Region in the Eastern United States.

Southern California is also the entertainment (motion picture, television, and recorded music) capital of the world and is home to Hollywood, the center of the motion picture industry. Headquartered in Southern California are The Walt Disney Company (which also owns ABC), Sony Pictures, Universal, MGM, Paramount Pictures (parent company of Dreamworks), 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers, and as well as Univision, Activision, and THQ.
